I find myself wondering where the time has gone. It must have been just yesterday that I first gazed into those newborn eyes and held his warm little body close to my heart for the first time. And, as much as I’d like it to, time does not stand still. In fact, when you have young children, I think you actually enter some sort of warp-speed time zone where the years actually melt away every time you blink.

On this momentous day in Jax’s life, I have written him a letter. This is a letter to my dearest son on his birthday. Happy birthday, little man! I love you most!

Dear my little man,

4 years old.  Wow.  I can’t believe that you are 4 years old.  I honestly don’t know where the time has gone.  4 years came and went too quickly for me. It makes me both happy and sad that you are getting older.  Sad because I feel like my little baby boy is slipping away from me and taking his place is this grown up kid.  And happy because I love the big boy that you have become. When your dad and I told you that you are now a big boy, you always asked us, does that means that you can have a skateboard already? The answer is not yet, Jax!
You have brought us nothing but pure joy since that very first moment. Watching you grow, absorbing the world around you, inquisitive and delighted to learn, I’m reminded each day of the treasure you bring into our world.

I am starting to see. You are no longer a baby, but a boy who is “fearfully and wonderfully made”, a unique person who God created and chose to be part of our family.
Now that you are such a big boy, I see more and more of YOU every day–the you that makes you Jax. and nobody else. You are outgoing. You are confident. You are brave. You are independent. You are strong. You are passionate. You are loving. You are funny. You are a wonderful and true worshipper. You are exactly who God wanted you to be, and I am so grateful that I get to watch you grow into YOU each and every day.

You love swimming. You love superhero characters. Baymax, Hulk, Thor, Spiderman, Power rangers, Ironman are your favorites at the moment.

Your music skills are out of this world. I don’t know many kids who can accurately sing not only nursery rhymes like twinkle twinkle little stars, but also complicated grown up worship songs and Disney musicals.

We love to watch you sing and dance, always entertaining those around you.

I love to see you eat. I love to spend mommy-son dates with you. You make the best shopping buddy, singing partner, the most helpful cleaning partner, and the greatest bedtime snuggling buddy there is to have.

The best part of my day is the joy infused by your smile, your hugs, the tender way you put your hand on my face or suddenly say, “Mommy, I love you!” I melt when you  say, “I want a hug, Mommy!” I adore that you need to be burrowed into your bed at night in order to sleep. I couldn’t live without your affection and kindness.

As all mothers do, I have goals, dreams and wishes for you. I have, as you can imagine, tons of them, but  I will try to limit myself so that this letter doesn’t look like a long and boring essay.

I pray that your life would follow God’s plan–and that me and your dad would be able to help you see that plan. That God would prosper you with the love of His Son, the Lord Jesus. That you would have hope in God, your first parent. That your future would be as bright and magnificent as your little 4-year old dreams. That you would continue to grow into YOU with the joy that comes from Above. That you would recognise your gifts, develop your gifts, and use them to serve our God for His glory.

I wish for the kind heart I see in you now to stay firmly in place.  Keep it, nurture it, handle it with care. You are one little man with a BIG personality and I am so privileged to be able to parent you through your adolescence. One day you will make a marvelous dad as you have children of your own, a desire you have already expressed at such a young age. Delight yourself in the Lord, little one, and He will bless you with the desires of your heart. While I do not want to rush it, I cannot wait to see and know the young man you will one day be.

Jax, every day we count our blessings and we are so blessed to have you in our lives.  You truly are amazing and have showed us what it means to love unconditionally.  We love you more than words can describe.  Keep being awesome and bringing joy to everyone who is lucky enough to know you.

What you are is a gift, a blessing, a privilege. You are no longer a baby, but as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be. Thank you for letting me be your mommy. Thank you for completing our family.

Love you very much! Happy birthday my dearest son!

Mommy
